It’s almost time to wrap up our summer and shift towards the new school year. There are many ways to plan and structure our rejuvenated selves so we can stay sane and efficient. Let’s look at 6 ways we can keep our family organized!

1. Morning routine

As we head back to school morning wake up and getting ready will be a critical time for starting the day off on the right foot. Plan ahead for success. What will the order of things be? Dress first? Breakfast first? Know how your kids function effectively and things will run smoothly. Try giving your kids and extra 15 minutes in the morning to wake up.

2. Pack a lunch

In the summer we tend to eat out a lot more. Preparing meals as we head back to school and work can save a lot of money. Packing lunches for the kids, but also for ourselves can save us when we need a midday energy boost. Take the time as the weekend comes to a close to write out a food plan for the week ahead and make sure you have everything on hand Sunday night.

3. Back to school shopping

Kids grow fast! What fit in the spring might be tight and ragged by fall. Take advantage of all those last minute sales and discounts in August. Temperatures also change. Now is the time to stock up on light hooded sweatshirts, pants and long sleeve t-shirts.

4. Afternoon plan for homework

Things flow better when we plan ahead. Know what your after school routine is going to look like. Do we need snacks right after school? Some time to relax and play? Or do your kids function better when homework comes first and then free time? Make agreements now and give your kids a heads up on what to expect.

5. Weekend fun

Now that we have all our administrative planning covered for the week we need to make sure we make space for downtime and outdoor fun on the weekend. Going to the beach or park can be a great way for the family to stay fit and out in nature. Spending time together is the most important part and what better way than seeing a movie or taking an afternoon hike? A fun activity out like a trampoline park or climbing gym can also be an exciting way to be together and active.

6. Family calendar

In a family there is so much happening and so much to schedule. Dental appointments, meetings and  sports activities just to name a few. Lots of logistics are needed to meet each of our individual needs. Keeping everything organized with a virtual or physical calendar on the fridge lets everyone in the family know what’s happening today.

Moving from the freedom of summer into the routines of the school year can be a challenging adjustment. If we are prepared and plan well it can also be a smooth transition.
